Field Trips

Farmer Stewart Loew and his wife, Laurel, a certified teacher, enjoy sharing their farm and knowledge with adults and children with farm tours and field trips by RESERVATION ONLY.  Call or email, we do not book online.

Before booking an outing, please remember - this is a REAL WORKING FARM - NOT A THEME PARK!  Although we can guarantee a beautiful setting with animals to visit, hay rides and real gardens to see, we are at the mercy of mother nature!  Weather, crops, etc. are not sure things!

Adult groups should contact us directly so we can tailor a tour to your needs and interests.  Home tours and lunch can also be included with adult visits.

For school groups, field trips can be booked in the spring (April) and fall (October). A minimum of 20 participants is required.  We recommend that you bring a few blankets to lay on the grass under the shade and have a picnic lunch before heading home.  Teachers, please have your total head count including staff, students, parents and siblings with payment (check, cash, PO, credit or a combination of ) ready upon arrival, including parents traveling separately in their own vehicles. This will expedite the admission process.  Please advise parents that the cost is an admission fee - if they choose to forgo the hayride or to not take a pumpkin (fall field trips) they will still be charged.  If your whole group will be ordering food from our concession stand (fall only) we will need to know at least one week in advance to be sure that we are adequately staffed and supplied.

SPRING FIELD TRIPS

Now Booking for April, 2010!!

Spring is a wonderful time to visit the farm!  There are usually baby animals to visit and the grounds are green and bursting with the new growth of spring.  This year, students will come away from their memorable day on the farm with a hands-on understanding of the vegetable growing process from soil to table!

The cost is $6 per child and $6 per parent (staff is not charged). Please advise parents that they will be charged admission whether they participate in activities or not.

For those of you who have only come for fall field trips, you may want to consider coming in the spring.  There are fewer students here at one time and lessons are guided by Laurel Loew (a certified elementary teacher) and Stewart Loew (as in “Farmer Loew”).
The Spring 2009 field trip would include;
•    A visit to the petting zoo to pet our friendly goats
•    Along the fence encounters with sheep, donkeys, geese and chickens
•    A hayride out to the pasture where the wagon will stop and students will meet our friendly horses and cows (NEW!)
•    A tour and hands-on lesson of the growing process (see lesson below)
•    Use of picnic area
Lesson:
Students will observe and participate in each stage of farming as they are guided through the farm.  At each stage, a minimum of 3-4 students will actually take part in the process.  By the end of the tour, every child will have had at least one opportunity to actually do some real farming!
The lesson will begin with soil.  We will discuss how we build soil by composting and students will try their hand at shoveling and sifting the soil for use in the greenhouse.  Then, students will participate in seeding cups for placement in the greenhouse.  They will then walk through one of our greenhouses and learn about the purpose of growing crops in that environment.  This will be followed with a walk to the fields where students will participate in transplanting a seedling into the garden.  They will be shown cultivation tools and will try using push-plows and hoes to cultivate in our demonstration garden.  Students will participate in the harvesting, then move to the packing shed to see where vegetables are washed and prepped for customers.  Here, they will each get to sample a crop grown on the farm.
Picnics are welcome.

Admission is $6 per visitor.  (Parents and siblings are also charged, staff is not).

FALL FIELD TRIPS

We are booked for October 2009 - but are extending field trips into the first week of November.  Email for details.

The pumpkin harvest is the most popular time to come to the farm and the fall field trips fill up fast!  Students will enjoy a hay ride, visit animals along the fence and in the petting zoo, have a garden talk, sack races, pick a small pumpkin and play in the hay maze.

Admission for fall field trip:

$7 per child (includes a small pumpkin.)

$5 per adult (does not include pumpkin.)  Parents can purchase pumpkins separately.  They will be weighed and priced per pound in the farm store.

There is no charge for staff members.  One pumpkin per classroom (for teacher) is included at no extra charge.

Our concession stand is open during the fall field trips.  If you anticipate your whole group eating at our concession stand, we need at least one week notice to be adequately staffed and supplied.

Picnics are welcome.

Baby animals make for a fun visit to the farm in the spring!

Field trips can be designed around your area of study.  This student was studying pioneer living which culminated in a trip to the farm to learn about the important role animals had in the lives of early settlers.
